Springfield, Illinois
Located about midway between Chicago and St. Louis along historic Route 66, Springfield, the capital of Illinois, encompasses 50 square miles and has an approximate population of 110,000. Having been the home of Abraham Lincoln for twenty years before he left in 1861 to become the 16th President, Springfield boasts numerous historic Lincoln sites, including his home, law offices, and tomb, in addition to a Civil War museum. Springfield also offers the Illinois State Fair (in August) and various other festivals, numerous museums, art galleries, and theatres. For the outdoors type, there are eight public parks, ten golf courses, five miles of wooded nature trails, and Lake Springfield for boating, fishing, windsurfing and other water sports.
