Midland, Michigan
Just 30 miles west of Lake Huron, Midland, Michigan (pop. about 41,000) offers a variety of entertainment and recreation year around. The city's 72 parks provide residents with trails for bicycling and cross-country skiing, in addition to facilities for beach volleyball, canoeing, golf, skating, soccer, softball, tennis, and more. For the naturalist, the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail begins in Midland at the "Tridge," a unique three-way bridge built over two rivers near downtown. The Chippewa Nature Trail and Dow Gardens are also in Midland and, for added outdoor fun, Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron are just a half hour away. If cheering from the stands is more to your liking, Midland is home to minor league baseball, and professional basketball, football and hockey are available two hours south in Detroit.
