Grand Rapids, Michigan
Just 30 miles east of Lake Michigan and sitting on the banks of the Grand River, Grand Rapids mixes surf and beaches with bridges, river walks, a pedestrian-friendly downtown and an abundance of unique and functional public sculptures - e.g., a sculpture made for children to climb on, a sculpture that doubles as a park year round and an ice rink in the winter, etc. The second largest city in the State of Michigan, Grand Rapids offers its 200,000 residents several museums, a symphony, opera, ballet, theater and Broadway shows, planetarium, botanical and zoological gardens, and more. The city is also home to dozens of parks, nature/hiking/biking trails, and several golf courses. And for those who would rather cheer from the stands, Grand Rapids additionally plays host to half-a-dozen sports teams.
