Des Moines, Iowa
Nearly in the center of the state and bisected by the Des Moines River is the city of Des Moines, Iowa, population about 200,000. The capitol of Iowa and host of the nationally renown Iowa State Fair (drawing nearly 1,000,000 fairgoers annually), Des Moines combines history with culture, entertainment, nature and sports, offering something for everyone. The greater metro area is home to several museums, a science center and IMAX theater, arts center, an arboretum and zoo, and the largest retail and entertainment complex in the state with 150+ stores and restaurants. Area residents also enjoy 300+ miles of walking/running, biking/skating trails (much of it around lakes and rivers), half a dozen golf courses and close proximity to the Saylorville Lake area for more outdoor fun. Several minor league sports teams also make their home in metro Des Moines.
