Linux Administration
UPP provides Linux system support services. For one firm specializing in recreational vehicle parts manufacture and distribution, UPP implemented and supports a Linux RedHat system with 500+ simultaneous users in a high-tech environment which enables advanced material handling (13 miles of automated conveyor, RF and bar coding), online buying and Web-enabled customer services. This environment includes nine total servers supporting one local and five remote warehouses over a WAN behind a Radius-authenticated Cisco PIX Firewall, running on Linux with EMC data storage. For
this client, Linux expertise has led to a three-fold increase in data performance over their former Windows NT system, and tripled daily order throughput. Additional services have included Samba and NFS configuration for optimized performance, automation of file transfers using Perl, kernel tuning for high-availability, and development of
administrative scripts using Bash and Korn shells. Additionally, for a manufacturer and distributor in the beverages industry, UPP staff have been contributing to Linux operating system setup and testing as part of an enterprise-wide proposal to replace Windows NT/2000 print servers using Samba, and also run Linux on their IBM S/390 mainframes. And for a producer of various chemical products, UPP has been supporting Linux RedHat with Beowulf clusters running OpenPBS and MPICH.
