Shoring Up Defenses with New Technology Initiatives

"To defend the United States and protects its interests through aerospace power."

Systems Integrator, UPP Business Systems, working with select partners and the men and women of the U.S. Air Force, is supporting this mission at Maxwell AFB, Gunter Annex with the modernization of the Core Automated Maintenance System (CAMS). This includes migrating CAMS, which provides mission-support information to more than 100,000 aircraft, missile, communications and electronics, and support equipment maintainers stationed at U.S. military installations around the world, from Unisys mainframe to client-server technologies and the World Wide Web.

Key UPP Business Systems personnel have been critical to completing a Proof of Concept for the project, including developing Unisys RDBMS CAMS, and also assisting with DMS Schema analysis and design. In related efforts, UPP Business Systems staff at Gunter have also designed and developed five relational database environments comprised of more than 200 tables and repositories, replacing one third of an existing hierarchical/ network database, hundreds of sequential tape cartridges, and an expensive Air Force-unique software environment with a modern, easier to maintain and modify database structure.

Following migration of CAMS from Unisys DMS to RDMS, UPP Business Systems developed a Web front-end for the system, replacing the Unisys "green screens" using HTML, JavaScript and Java, retaining Unisys as the database back-end and introducing Unisys WebTS as the Web server. This has included template development in HTML and JavaScript using Java applets for connectivity, data validation at entry, single-screen code lookup, XML extracts for data population, more robust and faster reporting with data export, a new administrative component for remote monitoring and troubleshooting, and continuing maintenance and support for the worldwide user base.

UPP Business Systems team efforts at Gunter have been recognized with achievement citations for contributions to the modernization initiative and Unisys RDMS redesign projects. Company staff received the "Commander's Coin" for excellence and quality, and other performance awards for work related to the modernization. Our resources were credited, in writing, with keeping the DMS analysis, design and program construction on schedule. The company's efforts in the CAMS database project also received recognition, with the CAMS Software Project Manager noting in his cite that we "stepped up to the plate and got the job done."
