Flying United
"It's Time to Fly"
From "Fly the Friendly Skies" to United Air Lines' current mantra, "It's Time to Fly," UPP Business Systems has been helping one of the largest airlines in the world soar to new heights with the provision of a variety of Systems Integration and Systems Infrastructure support services. Beginning with Unisys 2200 and IBM mainframe legacy systems management in the mid 1990s, UPP support for UAL has expanded in more recent years to include multi-platform UNIX and Linux systems administration; complex, multi-site project management for new technology rollouts; security auditing and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) support; and Java development.
Homing in on project management, a small team of UPP consultants have facilitated a number of infrastructure/ architecture projects, including a multi-million dollar workstation replacement project, impacting 1500 workstations at 55 sites worldwide within a 24x7x365 mission-critical maintenance organization; as well as a networking operating system upgrade project, including firewalls; a LAN/WAN conversion project, taking a 10.x subnet to a public IP subnet with Level 2 redundancy; and an Enterprise-wide Web application rollout on UNIX supporting the worldwide aircraft maintenance functions of UAL.
Directed the actions of project teams, spanning multiple departments and functions within business and technical environments. Partnered with internal business representatives to determine project scope, costs and schedules. Elicited business requirements from multiple business units, performed needs adjudication with cross-functional sub workgroups. Analyzed and adjudicated user workstation and software inventory against defined project scope and approved funding. Researched data relevant Microsoft Windows and UNIX servers, Windows workstations, addressing, etc.
Developed flexible deployment models for regions globally, taking into account staffing availability, competing priorities, contractor budgets, and business processes. Translated models into project plans, integrating activities across multiple divisions and multiple parallel threads of implementation. Defined milestones and deliverables, assigned responsibility for functional areas, assigned and allocated resources to tasks, and performed critical path analysis on project plans. Identified and mitigated risks, writing contingency plans. Employed Microsoft Project and VISIO.
Coordinated activities and facilitated communications. Led solution sessions resolving business and technical issues; led and documented weekly status meetings, senior management updates. Facilitated test coordination, functional design/ application requirements, technical design/OS build and network/server design, and ad-hoc workgroup sessions. Directed the activities of multiple managers, project managers, and team leads in support of achieving project goals in the areas of cost, schedule, and quality. Tracked status and provided weekly updates to IT and customer stakeholders.
