UPP Business Systems has been providing Systems Integration services to this Fortune 500 perennial since 1996. In the area of Web Application Development, assist with new development as well as migration of existing legacy applications to n-tier, object-oriented environments using Java technologies. In one such case, staff managed and took part in a $29 million, mission-critical Supply Chain Execution project, developing from the ground-up using Java, J2EE with Oracle 8i/9i running on WebSphere Application Server with Open Networks Directory Smart for authentication and security.

Made full use of Java, J2EE and Oracle extended functionality, including EJBs, Servlets, JSPs, JavaScript, DHTML, HTML, XML, XSLT, Oracle objects, object views, materialized views, relational tables and object tables. Also employed IBM MQ for integration with over twenty applications, and used a custom integration monitor for support and deployment of transactions. Total system functionality is split across three end-user devices, including Symbol (Windows CE) wireless devices. Transactional reports were developed using Business Objects WebI, and all analytical reports are accessed via a Data Warehouse.

This was a high-impact/high-visibility effort with significant known risks as well as an aggressive timeline. From a project management standpoint, responsible for a development team of 30 full-time onsite resources and 25 full-time outsourced (offshore) resources. Also responsible for a budget supporting development efforts as well as all hardware and middleware installation, in addition to research and development for wireless computing, automated material handling systems and additional object-oriented technologies.

Initiated project using an Evolutionary Delivery methodology until risks were identified and controlled. Later, implemented a scaled back "agile" version of RUP, focusing on short iterative development cycles, with XP layered on top of the existing methodology as an option for complex business components. Approached estimation from the bottom-up and based heavily on domain code reuse as well as object-oriented and J2EE Design Patterns. Estimated tiers and components individually and rolled into a Master MS-Project for detail and summary task tracking. Managed risks using metrics and rapid delivery. Ensured QA standards were met. Successfully saw the project through three corporate internal audits using the COBIT audit process.
