Improving the Human Condition by Mastering Science and Technology
"To constantly improve what is essential to human progress by mastering science and technology."
UPP Business Systems has been providing Infrastructure Support Services to Dow Chemical since 1999. A leading-edge company dedicated to corporate growth and human progress through Research & Development, Dow boasts world-class, state-of-the-art facilities, including the latest in Information Technology with a mix of SGI Onyx and Octane, Sun and HP servers and workstations as well as RS/6000s and DECs, running IRIX, Solaris 9, HP-UX, AIX, Tru64 and Linux, with connectively through Samba to PC-based networks running Microsoft Windows operating systems.
UPP Business Systems personnel directly support a large team of scientists, researchers and engineers at Dow corporate and additional staff at several other locations, performing high-level chemical modeling and engineering functions. In this complex, high-availability environment (70+ UNIX systems, 2 UNIX file servers, multi-node Linux and UNIX clusters), UPP systems support staff have been responsible for primarily UNIX hardware and software installation, upgrades, troubleshooting, administration and end user support, including networking and remote support, as well as firewall administration.
The UPP Business Systems team has installed SGI Octane machines used for high-level graphic and chemical modeling tools, installed and upgraded RedHat Linux with Beowulf clusters used for high-availability and load balancing, and installed batch queuing and parallelization software for Linux clusters. New installs/upgrades have also included installation of web servers along with Samba, as well as related administration, including authentication and integration with a wide variety of science and engineering applications, such as Accelrys, Matlab and Palmyra.
Support Linux clusters running OpenPBS and MPICH, and also support AIX systems running Beilstein and Sirsi databases. Responsible for compiling freeware for Linux 6.x/7.x as well as Solaris 9, and patched Solaris, Tru64 and HP-UX servers. Additionally, implemented IRIX server migration from SGI Origin 2000 to Origin 3000, facilitated upgrade of Legato backup to new Sun E450 server, and contributed to implementation of NetApp as a network attached storage solution for UNIX and Windows. Also implemented software for auditing/monitoring, as well as SNMP and APC software for Uninterruptible Power Supply.
