Shoring Up Defenses With Technical Infrastructure Support
"To provide best value logistics support to America's Armed Forces... around the clock, around the world."
This, the stated mission of the Defense Logistics Agency, is being achieved in part through the Federal government's Business Systems Modernization initiative, dedicated to revamping government Information Technology environments with the latest hardware and software, re-engineering systems and improving customer service. A worldwide logistics combat support operation, the Defense Logistics Agency's customers are the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, and their services providing everything the military needs from food to jet fuel.
UPP Business Systems, working with select partners and the dedicated staff at the Defense Logistics Agency, is supporting the group's mission at an affiliated Defense Supply Center (DSCR) Map Facility, itself dedicated to aviation weapon system and environmental logistics support for America's Armed Forces. Since 2000, UPP Business Systems has been assisting the DSCR with Map Mission support for America's War Fighters, focusing on the agency's Defense Mapping Agency Automated Distribution Management System used for electronic processing and distribution of geo-spatial information - maps and charts - from the National Imagery and Mapping Agency, or NIMA.
Working with other team members in the Map Facility, key UPP Business Systems personnel have been involved in mission-critical mainframe systems upgrade and migration efforts, assisting in modifying hundreds of programs for migrations at installations in the U.S. and abroad, and installing new dual partition systems to replace NX-4800s at the Map Facility and their remote disaster recovery center site. This includes moving, installation and configuration of hardware, software and extensive systems testing. The group has also been analyzing programs, making modifications to improve performance and procedures, correct existing problems, and add new features. System support accomplishments include: analyzing database dump processes and making program changes to reduce mainframe to UNIX process runtime from about five hours to just one hour, changing file naming schemes to simplify daily Operator tasks, analyzing schedules and operating procedures and making recommendations for improvements to simplify operations, conducting analyses and updating system documentation.
Related UPP Business Systems accomplishments have included: systems modifications for more efficient and precise map distribution and delivery, and in support of online map "kit" ordering as well as setup of electronic transfer of data to support the Map Mission. The team is also responsible for systems and process analysis to determine the best method for electronic order and delivery of maps, along with interface analysis to identify related needs and determine what would be required to support the replacement of legacy software, and is currently assisting with the replacement of legacy systems with client-server SAP (Oracle) and Web-based applications.
