Helping Deliver an Exceptional Vacation Experience

"To deliver exceptional vacation experiences through the world's best-known cruise brands... at an outstanding value unrivaled on land or at sea."

Since 1996, Systems Integrator, UPP Business Systems, has assisted Carnival Cruise Lines, a billion-dollar company and the world's most popular cruise line, in maintaining continued dominance in their field with continuing implementation, maintenance and support of the latest technologies. Company support of the Carnival mission began with lifecycle development of mission-critical legacy systems and legacy systems management and quickly grew to include client-server/Web migration along with project management.

Long-term success in the mainframe systems arena at Carnival, earned UPP Business Systems an invitation to assist the company with their mainframe to client-server/Web migration, re-writing the mission-critical Air/Sea Reservations systems in Visual Basic, while keeping the business logic in mainframe COBOL and using Uni-Access middleware to allow the COBOL to "talk" to the new Visual Basic GUI. A Visual Basic front end replaced the original DPS screens. The mainframe database was retained as a multi-TB data warehouse and yield management system, and then joined by Microsoft SQL Server on the back end.

Developed and managed the development on both ends of the spectrum. Responsible for analysis and design, development of specifications, modeling and prototyping. Developed Visual Basic screens, ActiveX objects and controls as well as related triggers and stored procedures. Coded to connect Visual Basic to SQL Server. Coded to perform all necessary functions on the mainframe and return data to the Visual Basic programs. Developed new transaction database server applications for implementing the client-server architecture. Responsible for testing, debugging, documentation, implementation, support and all aspects of large-scale project management.

Contributions to the migration effort led to additional opportunity in the new client-server/Web environment, including continuing Visual Basic and Web development of the Reservations systems as well as applications for Group Sales with Visual Basic/HTML on the front end, SQL Server as the database. Designed and developed Visual Basic interfaces. Designed and developed ActiveX controls, ActiveX DLLs and MTS components. Developed ASPs for Internet/intranet use of ActiveX and MTS. Wrote complex stored procedures for SQL Server.
